What mums eat

A photography project documenting the reality and everyday struggle of what mums eat while caring for a baby.

As a food photographer I’ve always been interested in how and what other people eat. As an emotional eater I’m also interested in how food makes us feel. And what that looks like when we no longer have the time or energy to nourish ourselves properly, despite it being something we desperately need.

Once I became a mother my relationship and proximity to food changed dramatically as the needs of my children overtook mine. The times I am by myself, food is now about sustenance and speed and no longer about meditation and joy.

There is such little support for mothers to be well in the early days when so much is required of us physically and mentally, so capturing a moment in time, a portrait, a meal, whatever form it takes is what I will share.

The hope is that this will be the start of a conversation about how mums should be better supported through nutrition and how that can have a fundamental impact on our mental and physical health.

The result will be an exhibition of a selection of the images at a gallery in East London.
