What Mums Eat is a photography project documenting and celebrating mothers by capturing the beautiful reality and everyday struggle of what they eat while raising children.

As a food photographer, I’ve always been fascinated by how and what other people eat. I’m equally interested in how food makes us feel and what that looks like when we no longer have the time or energy to nourish ourselves properly, despite needing to more than ever.

Becoming a mother radically shifted my relationship with food. My children’s needs began to eclipse my own. When I’m alone, food is now about sustenance and speed, no longer meditation or joy.

There is so little support for mothers to be well, from birth onward, despite the immense physical and emotional labour required of us. Through this project, I aim to capture a moment in time: a portrait, a meal, a quiet pause in the chaos. However it looks, I want to document it.

The hope is to start a conversation about how mothers deserve better support, especially through food. Because maternal nourishment is not a luxury, it’s essential to our mental and physical health. And when mothers are well, everyone benefits.
