What mums eat
A photography project capturing the beauty and reality of what and how mums eat.
As a food photographer I’ve always been interested in how and what other people eat. As an emotional eater I’m also interested in how food makes us feel. And what that looks like when we no longer have the time or energy to nourish ourselves properly, despite it being something we desperately need.
Sunday Dinners, a project where I captured what people around the world eat on a Sunday was an opportunity to learn how people centre food around a day of rest. With What Mums Eat my aim is to sensitively capture how and what we fuel ourselves with as parents when time is no longer something we have much of.
Since becoming a mother my relationship and proximity to food changed dramatically as the needs of my children overtook mine. I spend less time fantasising and preparing and more time agonising how many variations of each meal I need to prepare to satisfy everyone in my family. The times I am by myself, food is now about sustenance and speed and no longer about meditation and joy. I know this phase is temporary.
What Mums Eat is a project documenting the simple beauty but agonising reality of how we attempt to nourish ourselves as we navigate early motherhood. There is such little support for mothers to be well when so much is required of us physically and mentally, so capturing a moment in time, a portrait, a meal, whatever form it takes is what I will share.
I will be with you for an hour max, over a meal time of your choosing, shooting your space, some portraits and details. Likely with my nine month old strapped to me.
The result will be an exhibition of a selection of the images at a gallery in East London. And you will also get a selection of images as jpegs.
Raw, unfiltered, honest.
